Dragon Age Series Guide — Every Game Ranked & Where to Buy Cheap

The year is 2009. BioWare, the legendary studio behind Baldur's Gate, Knights of the Old Republic, and Mass Effect, returns to its roots — dark fantasy. Dragon Age: Origins is born — a game meant to be the spiritual successor to Baldur's Gate, and one that would redefine the RPG genre. Today, 15 years and four installments later, Dragon Age remains one of the most important fantasy series in gaming history. Here's the complete guide.

In this article, you'll find every Dragon Age game — from the epic Origins, through the controversial sequel, the GOTY-winning Inquisition, to the latest The Veilguard. Each game comes with a cheap key link and an honest review.

What Makes Dragon Age Special?

BioWare didn't just clone Baldur's Gate. They built a world that breathes. Thedas — a continent torn between an empire, free marches, and kingdoms — is one of the richest fantasy universes ever created in games. Each game in the series is set in a different corner of this world, with a different hero and a different story — but they all share a few core pillars.

1. Choices that matter. In Dragon Age, decisions aren't black and white. Who do you sacrifice? Which faction do you support? Every choice has consequences — not just in the current game, but in future installments. Save imports between games are a series hallmark.

2. Companions you'll love. Morrigan, Alistair, Varric, Solas — characters in Dragon Age aren't just NPCs with exclamation marks. They have their own motivations, secrets, and beliefs. Some you'll befriend, others you'll clash with, and some... might betray you. The approval/rivalry system was revolutionary.

3. Dark fantasy with depth. Sure, there are elves, dwarves, and dragons — but turned on their head. Elves are slaves in ghettos, dwarves have a caste system and political intrigue, and magic attracts demons from the Fade. Behind every beautiful vista lurks darkness.

Every Dragon Age Game — Ranked and Reviewed

1. Dragon Age: Origins (2009) ★ Masterpiece

The game that started it all — and for many fans, still the best entry in the series. As a Grey Warden, your mission is to stop the Blight — an invasion of Darkspawn led by an Archdemon dragon. Origins is tactical RPG with an isometric view and pause-and-play combat — the spiritual successor to Baldur's Gate. The origin system (6 different story prologues depending on your race and class) was masterful — each prologue offers a different perspective on Thedas. The Awakening expansion is practically a standalone game (20+ hours).

  • Best for: every RPG fan — an absolute genre essential
  • Platforms: PC (Steam, GOG)
  • Metacritic: 91/100

2. Dragon Age II (2011) ★ Underrated Gem

The most controversial entry — and simultaneously the most underrated. EA gave BioWare just 14-16 months to build a sequel (for comparison: Origins took 5 years). The result? Smaller budget, fewer locations, lots of recycled environments. But also... the best story and best protagonist in the series. Hawke — a refugee from Ferelden climbing the social ladder of Kirkwall — is a fully realized character. Instead of saving the world, you get a personal family saga spanning 7 years. Combat is faster and more dynamic (not everyone loved this). Dragon Age II is a flawed game with heart — and it gave us Varric, the best dwarf in video game history.

  • Best for: story and character lovers — approach with an open mind
  • Platforms: PC (EA App)
  • Metacritic: 82/100

3. Dragon Age: Inquisition (2014) ★ Game of the Year 2014

BioWare returns to the top. Inquisition wins Game of the Year 2014 (The Game Awards) and is the most ambitious entry in the series. As the Inquisitor, you lead an organization tasked with closing a mysterious tear in the sky (the Breach) and stopping a demon invasion. The game balances epic scale with personal storytelling — you have your own stronghold (Skyhold), manage the Inquisition's forces, and send agents on missions. Open zones, hundreds of hours of content, romanceable companions (Dorian, Cassandra, Solas...). Trespasser — the final DLC — is one of the best expansions ever made and an absolute must-play before Veilguard.

  • Best for: those seeking an epic open-world RPG with hundreds of hours of adventure
  • Platforms: PC (EA App)
  • Metacritic: 85/100

4. Dragon Age: The Veilguard (2024) ★ New Era

The latest entry after a 10-year wait. The Veilguard continues Solas' story from Trespasser — the elven god who wants to destroy the Veil between the physical world and the Fade. The game went through a turbulent development (originally multiplayer, then rebooted as single-player). The new combat system is action-oriented, and the story takes place mostly in northern Thedas. Reception was mixed — solid reviews, but fans of classic Origins may be disappointed by the departure from tactical RPG roots. Still — it's Dragon Age, with interesting companions and an atmospheric world.
